during the next few days george was excited by all the different things he
saw in the city.
he even went to one of the big supermarkets.
he pushed the cart for david's mother as she gathered things from the
shelves to place in the cart.
"how different," said george to himself.
"at home we don"t have to buy so many things to eat at a store because we
grow them in a garden."
one morning, near the end of the week, david's mother called to the boys,
"come on, sleepyheads, time to get up!
father left for work an hour ago, and i think today we will visit one of
the department stores."
after the boys had had breakfast and were all dressed and ready to go,
david's mother said, "since george has never been in one, we"ll take a taxicab
to the store."
george watched the meter in the taxicab as they drove to the department
store.
david's mother had told george that that was the machine that told the
driver how much money to ask for at the end of the ride.
david pointed out some of the places he had been to as they drove by.
"i"ve been there with father," he said, as they passed the zoo and the
museum.
david's mother pointed to the elevated train as it went by.
"see, george," she said.
"by taking the elevated train one can get across the city in a short time
without having to stop for other cars or people."
"just like the subway," said david.
"i never thought i would see a train in the air or under the ground," said
george.
