"shh!" whispered susan.
and all the class stood still.
that is, everyone stood still except larry johnson.
he was walking along, looking at a shelf filled with stories of adventure.
and as larry walked there was a squeak with every step.
all of the children laughed.
"larry made the squeaking noise," said susan.
"he made the noise with his new shoes."
larry looked down at his shoes.
"i am sorry i made such a noise," he said.
"next time i come to the library i will not wear squeaky shoes."
after the class left the library, they went to the park to eat their
lunches.
then they ran and played and laughed until miss white said it was time to
go home.
everybody had a good time and learned how to get books from the library.
david wilson was ten years old and had lived all his life in the city.
he lived on the eighth floor of a tall apartment building.
it was summer, and david had invited his cousin george for a week's
vacation.
george had never been to the city before.
he lived on a farm in the middle of the state.
at last the day came when george was to arrive.
george felt quite grown up coming alone by train to the city for a visit.
but he was glad to see david and his father when the train pulled into the
station.
everything looked very strange.
"let's take the subway home," said david.
"what's a subway?" asked george.
"it's something like the train you came on, george," said david's father.
