at last the day for the trip came.
the sun was shining brightly, and the school bus was parked in front of
the school.
everyone came to school all dressed up.
the girls wore ribbons in their hair, and almost every boy wore a necktie.
"my," said miss white, "how nice you all look for our trip today."
then all of the boys and girls in the second grade class went out and got
into the bus.
sally and susan sat in the first seat, just behind the bus driver.
when everyone was seated, the bus started down the street.
it went past the house where susan lived, past the post office and the
park, where they would eat their lunches.
at last the bus came to the library.
"who is that on the library steps?" asked sally.
"that is the librarian," said miss white.
"she is expecting us.
she will take us through the library and explain things to us."
the bus stopped.
the children went up to the steps where the librarian greeted them.
"good morning, children," she said.
"how nice of you to visit our library.
before we go inside, i want to explain to you that everyone must be quiet
in a library.
we do not want to disturb people who are reading or studying."
"now, when we first go into the building, we will go to a room where i can
explain how our library works.
you may talk and ask questions there.
but when we go through the rooms where people are reading, you must be
quiet."
